5 TOP TIPS TO CHRISTMAS DAY DRESSING

I'm often asked what is the best thing to wear on Christmas Day....read on for my 5 Top Tips to Christmas Day Dressing.

There is no right or wrong, it all depends upon you Christmas looks like for you.

We all need something different from our clothes and actually, this is true whatever the occasion, whatever the season and however we wish to feel in our clothes.

5 Top Tips to Christmas Day Dressing

Presents in our PJ's

Will it be a simpler Christmas with our families where the idea of presents in our Pyjama's will appeal or maybe you are intending to enjoy cocktails in cashmere?  Or perhaps you prefer an altogether smarter affair when you will be pulling on some sparkles?

Whatever you choice, here are my favourite top 5 Christmas Day Dressing tips.

Decide now what you are going to wear...and plan

Is it clean?  Does your blouse need a button replaced?  Does it still fit?  How do you feel in it?  Remember you may be wearing it all day.

Nothing worse than pulling something from your wardrobe on Christmas Day when time is premium and it doesn't cut the mustard.

Shower and do your make-up

Make-up first thing...you may not get another chance

First thing (perhaps once you have attended to popping your Turkey in the oven), have a shower and fix your face.....time will disappear through your fingers and you may not get chance before your guests arrive.  I KNOW!   I've been there.

Only dress your bottom half

If you are the Christmas Chef, only dress your bottom half whilst you continue to prepare the 'messy' bits, then all you have to do is change your top.  Don't cook in anything new...you don't wish to risk a spillage on it's first outing.  Love this opulent velvet option from Sosander

Don't wear your heels too soon

Wearing heels?  Don't put them on too soon and certainly not whilst you are lifting the Turkey about...those birds are heavy.  You don't want to topple over.

Aren't they a smashing colour.  Remember a smarter velvet can become a wardrobe staple for occasions throughout the year.  These from Marks and Spencer.

Sequins are not just for Christmas

Nothing quite like the opluence of sequins at this festive time.  Don't just save them for Christmas, you can extend them into the New Year celebrations and of course in true sustainability style, throughout the year too.

Have you decided upon your Christmas Day outfit yet?

What a year 2022 has been so I bring it to a close wishing you a most wonderful Christmas with your loved ones.

Thank you for being part of my community and I wish you seasonal magic and sparkle.

SUMMER STYLE ESSENTIALS

There are always a number of Summer Style Essentials that we rely on in our wardrobes whether we are jetting off somewhere or planning a staycation.

That’s also the great thing about the usual British Summer, it tends to be a shorter season so the clothes we wear don’t get too much use. So let’s call it Sustainable Summer Style Essentials allowing us to re-wear these items year after year.

Pieces that if we care for and love, can be re-introduced, re-explored and maybe, re-styled.

I’ve narrowed down my selection so read on for my Summer 7 - 7 key pieces I could not do without.

Sunglasses

Summer Style

More than an aid for protecting our eyes from the glare of sunlight and harmful UV and UVB rays but also, a fashionably cool accessory.

Like a swipe of lipstick, sunglasses can change our entire look.
Be mindful of fashion sunglasses that do not always provide sufficient UV protection so try to  look out for a CE Mark, UV400 or a British Standard Mark such as ISO to ensure good protection.

Tote / Beach Bag

The ultimate Summer accessory.  No-one wants to cart a heavy leather bag around in the Summer when our hands are sticky with sucream or icecream.  Instead choose a lighter style bag that will carry your everyday essentials.  Think Jute, Raffia or Straw.   A classic bag will stay with you season after season.

If you choose something with a reinforced base and good sturdy handles, you will be sure to use it on repeat each Summer.

Whichever you select, ensure it has a small compartment to keep you purse, keys and lippie safe and handy.    For a lovely range of bags take a look at these beauties by British brand Henrietta Spencer.

Embellished Sandals

There is something quite irresistible about a pair of sandals with some sort of embellishment or sparkle and since there are few days here in the UK when we can actually wear them, we can enjoy their return year after year.

Take a simple outfit up a notch with some embellished sandals.

Maxi Dress

A dress with a beautiful print will carry you through the Summer whatever your plans.  From strolling around a market, heading for a Mojito, barbeque on the beach or even a Wedding.  You may even manage to wear it in your workplace.

Style with your favourite accessories but keep it simple, the statement will be the print!

Choose a print that you love and you will be happy to wear your dress for longer.

Tie a scarf around your handbag for a stylish twist

Silk Scarf

A scarf can do far more than its name suggests – it can protect us from the sun and equally provides an extra layer when the temperatures fall.  Tie one around your wrist as a cool and colourful accessory or tie one around the handle of your bag for a stylish twist.

A scarf can also be used as a belt over a Summer dress to cinch around the waist.  I’ve also used a scarf before, knotted as an evening bag.

Sun Hat

Offering total protection for your skin, eyes and hair, a hat is a great all-rounder and makes a rather stylish statement too.  You can’t afford to leave home without one.

Choose a colour that effortlessly pairs with the clothes in your wardrobe but failing that, a good neutral colour will ensure it goes with everything!

Go for a wider brim for a glorious glamorous vibe!

Kimono

Who doesn’t love the free and easy feel of a Kimono.  Simply pair with a tee and pair of shorts or slip over your swimwear.  At the Spa?  Take one along as a cover-up!

They are a versatile addition to any wardrobe and there’s always a great choice of colours and patterns around.

This one I love from One Hundred Stars but check out the options from sustainable British brand Live Lagom.

Do let me know if your Top 7 Sustainable Summer Style Essentials are the same as mine!

I hope these styling tips help you.  Don’t forget to drink plenty and water and remember your sunscreen.  Do enjoy and happy and safe Summer.

OUT OF STEP WITH YOUR STYLE?

Hands up who feels out of step with your style?  If you answered yes, be assured you are not alone.

There is no doubt that after the many recent months, our dressing approach has fundamentally changed.  A new outlook on fashion and style has inevitably emerged and we are dressing differently.

Looking at the new collections for A/W 2021, it seems that our love for comfort and simplicity of loungewear and looser silhouettes are the order of the day.  I wonder if this represents a permanent shift from formal wear?

But what if this continuing trend does not work for you?  What if you really want to push your styling boundaries and break the mould of dressing monotony.

I consider myself incredibly privileged as I get to work with many amazing women who put their trust in me.  They trust me to direct them towards a dressing style that feels comfortable, that feels perfectly ‘at home’ for them and totally authentic.

It’s a job that I genuinely love!  I love coaching my clients to dress with confidence.  I love to help women feel good about themselves…..every.single.day.

What works for one, does not for another.  With a different set of values and characteristics, we are each unique.  Being able to express ourselves through our clothing is incredibly empowering.

Is this shift to a more casual vibe affecting how we show up and how we dress?  Maybe it is affecting how YOU prefer to dress and like many you have opted for the casual alternatives?  Following trends above clothing that fits and flatters us can lead us to feeling out of step with our style.

The good news?  The way we dress is something we can control.

Out of touch with your style?

Ask yourself how you wish to feel in your clothes

Triggers for image transformation

Whilst dressing to our own beat is very liberating, it can also be a difficult journey.  There is often a trigger.  Something that stops you dead in your tracks.

A worldwide pandemic is the first that springs to mind but perhaps also weight gain, a new job, a new partner, illness or how about a family Wedding where your ex-husband will also be attending with his younger wife!

The incentive to look and feel amazing is heightened.  We all want to look and feel good, to feel relevant and visible.

I've worked with many clients facing these knock-backs and poor self-image.  Understanding our style and how our clothes make us feel has never been more important to increasing both self-esteem and mental well-being.

Ask yourself how you wish to feel

Out of step with your style?

One of the areas I cover during my sessions is how you wish to feel in your clothes.  This will differ for each of us but does begin to shine a light upon clothes that help us feel good.

In order to find clothing that is in tune with you, I recommend you create a style mantra – just a simple three word statement that expresses how you wish to feel.  For example, a recent client chose to feel ‘Professional’, ‘Edgy’ and ‘Stylish’.  These positive affirmations will help you to visualise a style.

For some it could femininity, for some it’s an easy going relaxed style or for others, we wish our clothes to intrigue and excite.

This process is enlightening and acts as the catalyst to make other positive changes in your life.

Identify clothes that resonate with you

Out of step with your style?

Identify clothes that resonate with you

Many of us will have taken the time to review our wardrobes over the past months realising that there are items lurking at the back, unworn.  Take some time and sort your clothing into clothes that make you smile and those that don’t.  You will find this alone, cathartic.

Through this process you will see a pattern emerging.  Are you facing a colourful wardrobe, clothing with stripes or other patterns, lace or fabric with feel appeal or the sleek lines of structured clothing.  Make a note of what feels good for you as will be drawn to those garments time and again.

As an advocate that our clothes have the power to transform, the way we dress and how we feel are inextricably linked.

After months of comfortable leisurewear you may feel you are out of step with your style.  I can if you wish, lead you through an empowering process of transformation which may help you reconnect with a way of dressing that resonates with you.

If you feel out of step with your style and would like to work with me and explore how you can regain confidence in your clothes, I’d love to hear from you.

Thank you for reading.

PACKING FOR A SUMMER STAYCATION

From blistering temperatures to a freezing downpour that has us reaching for the waterproof’s!   Ah sounds like a holiday in the UK and you may be packing for a Summer staycation.

That’s one of the wonderful things about holidays in the UK.  There is such variety (on so many levels) which means being prepared to experience four seasons in just one day!

So if you are packing for a Summer staycation, here are some of my favourite tips to make holiday packing a breeze.

Hoorah!  No Baggage Allowance

The joy with a staycation is that we tend to travel by car so we may enjoy more flexibility.  No excuse to take the kitchen sink

Firstly you will need to consider the type of holiday

The items you choose to take with you does depend upon the type of holiday, is it a romantic get-away, an activity or beach holiday or are the kids coming with you?

Assuming it is not an activity or beach holiday you will spend your days drinking in the views of your chosen destination, go for simple and stylish and remember some comfortable flatties to wander the streets in.  Leave your heels behind unless you are headed somewhere very glamorous and have specific plans with smarter dining arrangements.

Add a hoodie to a simple Summer dress

The Packing Edit

A decent Coat or Jacket

Walking Boots or shoes comfortable enough to walk in with appropriate socks

A pair of trainers and a pair of sandals

Lightweight Trousers – preferably non-denim as they take longer to dry

A selection of short and long-sleeve Tee-Shirts

A couple of smarter tops for the evening

A skirt

A Sundress or Shirt Dress

A scarf that doubles as a cover-up from the sun or as an additional layer when the temperatures fall in the evening.  Lovely  Cashmere range here from Amadablam Cashmere.

Why not view my Pinterest board here for some staycation holiday outfit inspiration.

Packing for a Summer StaycationLay out your clothes before you pack

This will help you to see what goes with what and can help you make a list of outfits.  You can save valuable packing space if you choose versatile clothing to mix and match allowing you to wear items that transition throughout the day into evening.  Sticking to a similar colour palette helps here too.  I am a great fan of a variety of different tops that can be paired with wide leg palazzo trousers – very cool for both day and night.

The Packing itself…

Be ruthless and ensure you try everything on before you pack it, does it fit and does it make you happy.  Rolling your clothes saves valuable space and also prevents creasing.  Don’t forget the valuable space inside a pair of shoes (oh and possibly wellies….it is the UK remember) and use this space for socks, swimwear, underwear or suncream.

Accessories

Accessories tie an outfit together very well – a statement belt, jewellery or indeed a hat.  Consider the colour and if it will combine well with other outfits.  I slip additional jewellery into a jewellery roll within an ‘evening’ bag.  Unless you know your accommodation has a safe, leave your finer jewellery at home.

Summer Staycation Travel Essentials

First up, how about a sand-resistant Beach Towel that leaves the sand behind with a quick shake.  I was rather taken with this super absorbant, quick drying towel made entirely from recycled materials.  Available in a great array of colours, it’s a useful item for camping, sports, hiking or for a day on the beach.  A different colour for each family member maybe?

Wherever you go you will need to protect yourself from the sun and so a high factor suncream is a must.  Better still invest in the amazing Tancream which combines self-tan AND sun protection of SPF50.

Sunglasses are not only a fashionably cool accessory but a necessary aid to protect our eyes from the glare of sunlight and harmful UV rays.

Finally, don’t leave home without your umbrella, face-mask or hand sanitiser!

So there you have it, I hope you have learnt something about packing for a Summer staycation but if you need any help in putting together a selection of flexible holiday garments.

Enjoy a very safe and Happy Holiday!

DRESSING FOR SUMMER

There are still many of us coming to terms with a post-pandemic dressing routine but perhaps dressing for Summer may give you the incentive to get back on track? Having spent more than a year in clothes that made us feel comfortable, many of my clients have become stuck in a styling rut.

Now that we can return to our local high street once again, Summer could be the butt-kick we need to add some new pieces to our wardrobe.  Pieces that work for you that you can reach for year after year.

It’s not about the latest trends but about the key elements you need to consider.   Needless to say that anything with tight waistbands should be avoided!

We all realise that future Summer’s are likely to become a whole lot hotter!   Since successful Summer dressing is all about staying cool, how do we maintain a stylish look?  Read on for some guidance on Dressing for Summer over the coming weeks.

Natural Fabrics

First up, choose natural fibres that breathe more easily such as cotton, linen (watch out for the creasing mind), silk, chambray (a plain weave fabric) or a loose Jersey.

If you do happen to sweat, natural fabrics will dry faster.

It’s worth noting that Synthetic fabrics such as polyester or rayon may cause you to sweat more.  Clothes that stick to our bodies is not a good look!

For those of you able to make your own clothes, check out Sewsocialising (an independent fabric shop and sewing studio in York) who have a great range of Summer fabrics and also offer a mail-order service too!

Choose some paler shades

We associate lighter colours with a Summer vibe so choosing some pastels and paler shades will reflect the light and keep you cooler.    It’s a great way to switch around the darker clothes in the wardrobe.

Layering is key

Think about using layers to add interest or to regulate your temperature particularly if  you are out and about.  Take a large but fine scarf with you to wrap over your shoulders.  This will protect you from the sun but also acts as a further layer if the temperature cools.  Alternatively an oversize shirt is also a good option to slip over a simple tee.

In a working environment, having a light jacket close at hand is always useful.

Loose and Floaty

Clothing with a looser silhouette is a good staple for your Summer wardrobe as it allows air to flow easily around your body.  Anything too fitted could make you feel a little sticky in the heat.

If you prefer a little shape, you could always cinch the waist using a softer style belt or a scarf for a belt.

Add a splash of Colour above your waist

If you are still working from home and Zoom remains your mode of communication, choose more interesting basics in your tops that have interest built in rather than a single plain colour.  You can keep that for your bottoms.

Back in the office?  Add a splash of colour anyway!

Anyone for a jumpsuit?

An alternative cooler option to your usual top and bottoms.  There are some great styles this season so choose wisely for your body shape…

Straight leg styles work for a straighter body shape

Wide Leg styles work for those with a curvy body shape

If you are short, opt for a full length trouser rather than the cropped styles that visually reduce your height.  I cover this and more within my pampering and informative Personal Styling consultation.

Add a hoodie to a simple Summer dress

Dresses are cooler

Wearing dresses is a great strategy as there is nothing complicated to combine and then if you need to add a layer (heading onto a zoom or meeting a client) you can slip on a Kimono, fine knit vest top or depending upon the style, a hoodie – see image.

Think also about a shirt dress that will still feel loose but flattering and with the vertical button detailing, will make you look taller!  There’s a ‘win’ right there!

The longer style hemlines don’t work for all proportions so remember not to end the hemline on the widest point of your leg.

Wardrobe Basics

If we also consider transitional dressing, we can add a longer sleeve tee underneath our Summerwear such as a dress  or blouse for Spring and potentially Autumn wear.

Remaining professional when the temperatures rise

Anyone thinking this is a little trickier during the Summer months?

My advice is to opt for a simple work-appropriate dress and keep a light jacket, cardigan or finer wrap ready for the office environment.  Keep your colour palette on the lighter end of the spectrum.

Choosing a wider leg trouser style is also a great option which can be paired with heels, a flatter pump or smarter trainer.

A short sleeve silk or cotton blouse can look equally stylish with a skirt of your choosing.  The look can be brightened up with footwear and minimal jewellery.

Still need to wear a jacket?  Opt for an unlined jacket which reduces one extra later.

Dressing for Summer

Photo credit: Birkenstock Arizona Vegan Birko-Flor in Light Rose

Footloose and fancy free

Keeping your feet cool and comfortable is essential in the warmer weather.  Opt for a stylish pair of open toe slides, wedges or some Birkenstocks which are available in a wonderful array of colours.  Choosing a neutral tone ensures they offer more outfit flexibility.

Keep your make-up light and natural

Instead of a heavier foundation choose instead a tinted moisturiser that tends not to crease when the temperatures rise.  Change up a darker lip colour for a paler shade or a tinted lip gloss or balm.

Replace your black eye liner or mascara with a softer shade – brown is a great alternative for all skin tones.

Dressing for Summer

Tie a scarf around your handbag for a stylish twist

And to top it off…

A hat will keep the sun off your face and neck but having a small scarf with you to tie your hair up is a helpful addition for your bag – try tying onto your bag for an extra stylish twist?

Drink plenty of water

It’s important that you keep your fluid intake up especially during the hotter months.  Try drinking from a nicer glass or keeping a water bottle on your desk to top you up.

DO CLOTHES ENHANCE OUR PERSONAL BRAND?

I have long been an advocate that our clothing is powerful!  We know that wearing clothes that fit and flatter can lead to enhanced self-esteem and confidence.   So, do clothes enhance our personal brand?

Remember wearing an outfit that made you feel like a $Million?  You felt amazing, invincible maybe?  It's as if you can take on the world?  That’s what I’m talking about, clothes that support you and make you feel like a better version of yourself.

When also aligned with our lifestyle and personality our clothes have the power to elevate our status and empower us.

Whether you appreciate it or not, you have a Personal Brand.  A personal brand is all about YOU.    How you promote yourself.  It’s your unique combination of skills, expertise, personality and how you show up.

We all make judgements based on appearance.  Anyone like to hazard a guess as to the length of time it takes to create a first impression?

According to Forbes….just 7 seconds.  Seven seconds to create a favourable impression that can open doors and opportunities for us.   It's well worth making the effort.

It’s just as well that our personal brand allows us to differentiate ourselves from others and enhance our credibility.  That’s why I am a great believer that wearing clothes that work for us enables us to present ourselves in an authentic way.  Our clothing is an extension of us and a major communication tool in creating that positive first impression.

Let me guide you to developing a positive personal brand through your clothes.

Define how you wish to be perceived

This will differ for us all, so think about the way you wish to make an impact in the form of a mantra.   I suggest thinking about this as a form of words – 3 is a good place to begin.  What sums up your brand?

Linking this mantra to the way we dress, helps to focus our mind on our aspirations and goals.  It helps us define the image we wish to create with our clothes each day.

Choose Flexible Pieces that reflect you and your brand

Using your style mantra is a valuable way to identify clothes that really express your qualities.

Once we identify a style that reflects our brand, our clothing choices become far easier, we become more discerning and learn to select more successfully.

Choose current ‘trends’ with care – just because a garment is ‘on-trend’ does not mean that it will suit us all.  Choosing carefully also ensures that the garment will mix and match with others in our wardrobes and maximises our choices.

If you have not yet identified a style that resonates with you, consider putting together a Pinterest ‘look book’ to inspire you.

What is appropriate for your Industry?

Our clothes should be congruent with our industry, our profession and the role we hold.  They should serve to enhance our credibility.

For example, anyone working within a creative environment can express themselves more flamboyantly in their dressing style.  In fact, it is almost expected.

Consider your life journey so far – the lengths you have taken to reach your current position.  You’ve studied hard at College or University, you’re progressing up the career ladder perhaps you have an MBA under your belt.   Ask yourself if your clothes reflect the time and effort that you have taken?

Do clothes enhance our personal brand?

A well-organised wardrobe helps you see your choices at a glance

Plan your wardrobe and get organised

Your wardrobe holds the secrets to dressing successfully and feeling good.  A well-organised wardrobe makes dressing so much easier.  Take some time to organise your wardrobe and as a guide, pairing similar colours together and by category (blouses, skirts or trousers for example) works well.

It enables you to see your choices at a glance.

Consider laying your clothes out the night before leaving you time in the morning to plan for your day ahead.  It also allows you time to take action on a missing button or a toothpaste stain.

Do clothes enhance our personal brand?

Ensure your nails are well-groomed.

Personal Grooming

Never underestimate the value of our personal grooming and the attention we pay to the small details.  Our hair, our nails and accessories (for men and women) all add up to our overall brand.

A chipped nail, a frayed cuff a missing button are all elements that may give us cause for discomfort.  Noticing it in yourself may cause you to hang back, and not fully participate for fear of being noticed in a negative way.

The small details matter.

Need some help?  Use an Image Consultant to help you

Are our clothes going the change the world?  No of course not but your image impacts the way you feel about yourself and how others communicate and interact with you.

So do clothes enhance our personal brand?  In my opinion, yes!  We can carry ourselves differently and even walk taller knowing that we are dressing to our strengths.

Don’t be afraid to seek the support of an Image Consultant or Personal Stylist who can help you focus on your ‘Presence’ - the impact you are making through your clothing.

Take a moment to consider how you wish to present yourself.  Does your appearance tell the story you wish people to see?

ACCESSORIES AMPLIFY OUR PERSONALITY

Accessories amplify our personalityACCESSORIES AMPLIFY OUR PERSONALITY

Anything we choose to put on our bodies is a form of self-expression and so whatever we choose to wear, we are using our clothes to develop our own style, our personal brand.  In the same way, our accessories amplify our personality.

A carefully chosen accessory adds a different dimension to an outfit creating visual impact.  It's also a way to enhance a certain part of our body - a belt to show off a waist or  a necklace to flatters our neck and decolletage.

When Zoom is making us all 'above the waist visible', our accessories are particularly important right now.

Many things influence the clothes we wear.  It is personal choice and a wonderful form of self-expression don't you think?

Our accessories are a great way to amplify our personality whether for our working or social wardrobes.

What makes us choose our accessories and jewellery, patterns or frills over clean lines or clothing made of natural fabrics?  The answer is that many things contribute to our choices such as our childhoods, the influence of a family member, celebrity and what we may see virtually.   Accessories enhance our personal style.  They elevate an outfit and complete the look.

Think of our accessories as our 'best friend'.  They make us smile, elevate our best bits  and serve to emphasise our personal style and preferences.

The key to successful accessorising is understanding what works for us.  A few good accessories add versatility to our wardrobe so by changing our accessories we extend the life of our clothes giving them a new lease of life if paired differently.

A good start is if we take some time to consider the shapes we prefer, the materials that resonate with us - gold or silver, wood or glass, felt or pearl and if you prefer sparkly or matte and the overall style.  We soon develop a familiar style that feels comfortable for us.

Here are my Top 3 Accessories for 'above the waist' dressing....

A colourful scarf can take your outfit up a notch

Scarves

A colourful scarf is a great way to take an outfit up a notch whatever the time of year.  It would be a shame to wear them only when the weather is cooler.  Use a finer scarf to protect your shoulders  from the sun or use as a belt on a favourite pair of trousers.  You could also wrap a scarf around the handles of your handbag.  As you can see here, a scarf is a great way to inject colour.  Heaven knows we could all do with a little more colour in our lives now that Spring is emerging.

Accessorise - Alba Statement Green Resin Earrings

Photo credit; Accessorize - Alba Statement Green Resin Earrings

Earrings

Particularly important now that Zoom or Team meetings are the order of the day.  Great to add interest to plainer clothes and are instantly visible adding an instant 'zing' which can really complement your face shape and enhance your cheekbones if chosen wisely.  Think about your face shape...

Oval Face - can wear most shapes

Round Face - choose earring styles that elongate your face such as drop earrings

Angular - choose diamond, rectangular or sqaure shapes to flatter your face shape

Accessories amplify our personality

Consider adding colour for a bit of fun

Necklaces

Are a great way to make a statement and to enhance your neck and décolletage area.  Long necks look great with chokers whilst shorter necks are flattered by longer layered necklaces.

Rather than gold or silver, consider introducing colour in a necklace.  It adds a bit of fun.

The smallest change to our appearance can have a huge impact so its not about busting your budget.  Spicing up your outfit with a carefully chosen accessory is a great alternative to forking out on an entire new outfit ...a new scarf, handbag or shoes....or how about these...your sunglasses, umbrellas, watches, keyrings, laptop bag, purses, spectacle case and even the spectacles.

Our accessories allows us to repeat the same outfit but give it an entirely different feel!  Our accessories can differentiate us and set us apart.

As we emerge from this Pandemic and start to swap our leisurewear for smarter choices, get into the habit of adding an accessory every day.   As one client said to me recently..."following your advice, I now wear jewellery every day and feel fabulous, thank you".  Our accessories amplify our personality.

Even the smallest of changes can lead to a whole host of positive outcomes.

If you'd like to continue this conversation or would like to learn more about my services, I'd love to hear from you.

I PREDICT POSITIVE CLOTHES FOR 2021

No-one needs a reminder that 2020 has been a challenging year on so many fronts.  I predict positive clothes for 2021!

I believe we began to really appreciate the value of the outdoors to our mental well-being and the importance of our planet.  Let us hope that we all continue to place this as a priority over the coming years.

For so many, casualwear became the clothing of choice.  It offered comfort whilst staying and working from home.

Bear in mind that how we dress, what we choose to wear has a significant impact upon the way we feel.  Perhaps our loungewear does not adequately project a working image especially when our calls are visual.  Whilst not dressing formally, a smarter casual on-screen personal creates a positive working attitude.

However, the very act of getting dressed as if we are leaving the house to work or meet up with friends, offers us a structure and a routine that sets the tone for the day ahead.  Positive!

So, what does this mean for the face of fashion for 2021?  A desire to ‘dress up’ and step up our dressing routine again I wonder?  I hope!

Based on the pared down versions of the key fashion shows earlier this year, there will surely be some style winners for 2021 and for what it’s worth, I make my predictions here:

Vibrant Colour

With rainbow stripes appearing in windows, on T-shirts and other garments, the emblem we adopted for 2020 became a symbol of hope and optimism.  Colour is a wonderful phenomenon that creates a whole host of emotional responses.

Each year the Pantone Institute (the worldwide authority on colour) selects a ‘colour of the year’.  It’s a snapshot of what they see taking place in our global culture.

Unusually, rather than a single colour, a colour-pairing has been announced for 2021.  What do you think to Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Gray?  Pantone describes their choice as “a marriage of colours conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting”.  What a great positive message.

I really love this fresh combination and shall look forward to seeing these shades brightening us all up on our high streets in Spring.  Watch out for future guidance on my other social pages on how to successfully inject these colours into your wardrobe.

Also watch out for Pink!  I saw this featured in many collections.

Don’t underestimate the power of colour and the joy it can bring to you and your wardrobe.  You may wish to learn more about my Colour Analysis service that identifies the most flattering colours for you.

Good Wardrobe Staples

Good wardrobe staples

Good wardrobe staples

Creating a more sustainable capsule wardrobe focusing on quality essentials for longevity is going to be key for our pockets and the future of our planet.  I’m thinking more classic and versatile pieces that stand the test of time.  In fact, pieces you may already own.

These are the pieces that we tend to spend a little more on – good shirts and blouses, outerwear, footwear and investment handbags.

We can’t all stretch to the designer price tag but we can shop second hand via our charity shops, vintage markets or dress agencies.  There are some great finds to be had.

If a label is important to you, Vestiaire Collective is another great option – a global fashion community selling pre-owned designer items.

Should you wish to buy new, choose to invest in brands whose sustainable and ethical credentials are visible – Baukjen is one of my favourites offering a wonderful clothing range.  Look also for the smaller independent brands that display a responsible fashion ethos such as Livelagom.

Feel-Good Prints

We tend to see more prints appearing on our clothing during the Summer months – perhaps it heralds a more carefree way of dressing?  Given that holidays to sunnier climes eluded most of us during 2020, I predict that we will see some holiday inspired prints this year.  Think palms, Hawaiian style patterns and even a nod to marine life may emblazon the clothing choices for Summer this year.  All great paired with beach bags and wedge style espadrilles.

Denim

With an altogether more relaxed style emerging, denim continues to reign supreme.  The slimmer silhouette of the skinny jeans however will be replaced by a more relaxed or slouchy style.  This is music to my ears.  A boot cut or wide-leg jean are universally more flattering on all body shapes.  Great wardrobe pieces that can be dressed up or down.   They offer a really flexible wardrobe addition that also serves to elevate the ‘yoga-pant’ look.

Bring back Dresses

With so many social and special gatherings put on hold, I envisage that we may wish to go a little bolder when events return to our calendars.  We have missed dressing up and wearing heels.  A special occasion is a great opportunity to combine the two.

I’ve noticed that more flamboyant styles with fuller skirts and embellishments have featured on the virtual catwalks so can’t wait to see how our high street brands interpret these statement looks.

It will be fascinating to see exactly what appears in our clothing stores over the coming seasons.  I hope that above all, fashion makes us feel good and that we choose more more mindfully to protect our planet and those working Internationally in the fashion industry.  Choose positive clothes for 2021!

CREATING A SUSTAINABLE WARDROBE

There are all sorts of strategies we can implement in creating a sustainable wardrobe.  We can embrace and adopt a more environmentally friendly way of choosing and using our clothes.  With a little time-investment the benefits are well worth the effort.

My journey into sustainability began at home – growing up with a Mother and two Grandmothers’ who had experienced life through the War years.  A time where resources were scarce and clothes had to last.  I was therefore taught how to choose and buy clothes well so the garment lasted longer.

This was my first taste of sustainable fashion so it’s easy to see how those earlier experiences have shaped how I choose and treat my clothes now.

According to The Waste Resources and Action Programme (WRAP) – the average lifespan of a garment is a mere shocking 2.2 Years and an estimated £140 M worth of clothing ends up in landfill.  Wouldn't it be great to play a part in increasing that lifespan?

By choosing well in the first place we are doing our bit to protect the World’s resources, reducing clothes going to landfill and to reducing human exploitation in this industry.

I do believe that we all share a responsibility to slow fashion right down!  There is also a feel-good element at play here – a feeling that you are doing good for those around us and for our environment.

So what can we do.....

Here are my 5 Top Tips on creating a sustainable wardrobe

  1. The most sustainable thing we can do is wear what we already own

    Creating a sustainable wardrobe

Get creative with those items you have

I would hazard a guess that most of us have items lurking at the back of our wardrobes waiting to be re-worn and re-loved.  Create some time to go through your wardrobe and get creative with those items you have.  We can re-use and re-purpose wherever possible – pair your clothes differently to maximise their wear.  Is there anything here you can try?  The same blouse but with different trousers, a different skirt or as a layering piece perhaps?

If there are items that you will definitely no longer wear, gift them to a friend, fill a charity bag or donate to a fabric bank for someone else to benefit.

  1. Respect our clothes and treat them kindly

Consider your choice of detergent and washing temperatures

If we buy better quality clothes it is more likely they will last longer and we are more likely to care for them.  Hanging clothes after each wearing and storing them well will elongate their life.   Be mindful of over washing (particularly those synthetic clothes, which release plastic particles which may find their way into the sea) and also consider your choice of detergent and washing temperatures – cooler temperatures can be kinder.

  1. Find a good Tailor or Seamstress

A good tailor or seamstress is worth their weight in gold.  They have the knack of breathing new life into a garment meaning you are able to enjoy the garment for longer and perhaps in a totally new guise.  If like me, the sewing gene passed you by, at least consider changing up buttons yourself to create a whole new look on a blouse, a jumper sleeve or jacket.  If you are local to York I recommend Sew Versatile who will do an excellent job for you.

  1. Choose our clothes more selectively

This may take some time but researching some new brands that operate with green credentials - look out for organic or Eco-friendly certifications.  We can also choose fabrics that are natural or organic such as linens, silks, wool or synthetically derived fabrics from plant materials such as Viscose, Lyocell, Tencel or Rayon. All of which will biodegrade.  You will be more informed to make better future choices.

  1. Change our attitudes to shopping

I have often spoken of the effect of fast fashion production upon our environment.  I do believe that we CAN all play a part in reducing the environmental impact by shopping smarter.

We can help to change the culture of consumerism by choosing more sensibly and buying less.  Buy only what we need to replace and try pre-loved clothing.  There are some great vintage shops offering some quality treasures that have all been saved from landfill.  That has to be worth learning more about.

If you are local to York try Dog and Bone Vintage  or York Designer Dress Agency.

There is a feel-good factor to behaving in a sustainable way whatever the element...be it using natural products above harsh chemicals, buying from companies with ethical credentials or re-purposing the garments we already own.

I’d love to know what elements you already embrace?

THE SMALL TOUCHES WILL SET YOU APART

Have you ever thought that when you want to create a great and lasting impression, the small touches will set you apart?

Making some small changes to your wardrobe can play an important part in your success.  Wearing clothes that boost your confidence is a good place to begin.  Remember also that our clothes should enhance our reputation and credibility and as such, are an investment in our future success.

I’ve met many women who have felt stuck and find it difficult to navigate their way through a change in their dressing style.

However it needn’t be a daunting task if you tweak just ONE thing.  A different trouser style, a fitted top rather than the baggy one you reach for each day or trying an alternative to black.

How about introducing a flattering colour, changing up your jewellery or adding a scarf.  It need not cost the earth to get you started.

The key is to understand what makes you feel comfortable and developing your Signature Style may provide something that people will remember about you.

Changing up your jewellery or adding a scarf will add impact

Take a peek in your wardrobe...

And identify those items that you love to wear and feel great in.  Can you pair them differently and inject some colour using a scarf or jewellery?

Now that technology has made us more visible, colour will add impact to our appearance so don’t be afraid to experiment and add personality to your working outfits.

A stylish twist using your accessories will certainly give you the edge.  A striking necklace or bolder lip colour is a good start.

The small touches will set you apart

Develop some key staples that mix and match together

Plan

The key to making some small changes to your appearance is to plan.  Developing some key staples that mix and match together will provide you with a polished and comfortable look.

Gradually building a wardrobe of flexible pieces allows us to maximise what we already have and ultimately saves money.

Laying your clothes out the evening before...

The small touches will set you apart

Laying out your clothes the evening before saves you valuable time in the morning

Saves valuable time on a busy morning when your dressing routine is shared with husbands, partners, children or animals who may all take priority.  Preparing for the next day allows you time to be a little more creative with you choices.  Try it and let me know.

When did you last change your hairstyle?

We can get comfortable with our appearance and become afraid to change in-case we stand out, draw attention to ourselves or in the event we don’t like it.

Long hair at any age can look great but clinging to a style from long ago can make anyone look and feel stuck in the past.  If you are in any doubt, take a look at this amazing transformation.

Never underestimate the impact of any small change you make to your appearance.   For example, a simple swipe of lipstick or as we have seen above, a change of hairstyle could be the catalyst to really positive and fundamental change.

So if you want to be remembered for the new job, the promotion, the new addition to the Board, the new partner, the small touches will set you apart.

If you would like to open some new doors and take some small steps to creating a lasting impression toward new opportunities, then do get in touch anytime for a  courtesy consultation, I would love to help you.
